I don't always wake up feeling like a plant-based superhero. That's why I incorporate these 4 ayurdevic practices into my morning routine "boot up" my body and mind.
As strange as this may sound, this is an easy & fast way to “detox” your body the minute you open your eyes.
After waking up, try hopping into the bathroom while your coffee maker/tea kettle is doing its thing, and using a toothbrush, or better yet, a tongue scraper (insert link for tongue scraper on Amazon), to clean off the top later of the tongue. It will instantly get rid of that morning-mouth feeling, and will freshen you up!
We also love to add this to our nighttime oral hygiene routine – brush, floss, scrape, mouthwash, cleanest mouth ever.
Warm Lemon Water
Everyone has undoubtedly heard of the benefits of having warm lemon water first thing in the morning. Lemons are naturally high in vitamin C and flavonoids. After scraping that tongue, it will be happy to absorb the delicious nutrients that are in warm lemon water! Drinking lemon water either room temperature or warm will help ease the body into the day – drinking cold liquids right away can offset stomach and put it in a bit of a shock.
Fill a 16 ounce glass with warm water, and drop in sliced lemon, or squeeze in the juice of ½ a lemon. Ideally, enjoy before putting anything else into your body.
And again, we’re back with helping the mouth get clean. Oil Pulling involves “pulling” or swishing either coconut or sesame oil around your mouth, like mouthwash without the gargling, for 10-20 minutes. This is a great thing to after breakfast/coffee, right before brushing teeth. Oil pulling helps to extract excess bacteria in your mouth!
After you enjoy breakfast, pop a tablespoon or so of coconut oil into your mouth and start swishing! Be sure not to swallow any of the oil, since it’s carrying that bacteria. Brush teeth immediately after, to remove all the excess oil from your mouth.
If Miranda Kerr swears by it, we’re in too. Body brushing stimulates the movement of lymphatic fluid in the body, exfoliates and encourages the growth of new skin cells, and helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Before showering/bathing, grab a body brush and brush your skin in slow, circular motions. It’s best to do this before showering so you can remove all that dead skin!
